Fort Collins, Colorado, was officially founded as a military fort in 1864. It was named after Colonel William O. Collins. The fort's initial location near present-day Laporte was moved to its current location in 1867 due to flooding. Fort Collins was later incorporated as a town in 1873.
Fort Collins is situated in Larimer County, approximately 65 miles north of Denver and 45 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The city is positioned along the Cache la Poudre River.
The city's elevation is around 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) above sea level, which is typical for cities along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.
Summers: Summers are warm to hot, with average high temperatures in July around 85°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C). Nights are generally cooler, providing relief from the daytime heat.
Winters: Winters are cold, with average high temperatures in December and January around 40°F to 45°F (4°C to 7°C) and average lows often dropping below freezing. Snowfall is common but typically moderate compared to higher elevations in Colorado.
